It is their 11th studio album and the one with a stronger pop focus than previous albums made by the group.Bassist John McVie and keyboardistvocalist Christine McVie had just gone through a divorce, guitaristvocalist Lindsey Buckingham and vocalist Stevie Nicks were in an on-againoff-again relationship that often resulted in them fighting outside of songmaking sessions, and drummer Mick Fleetwood just discovered his then-wife Jenny Boyd having an affair, which led him to walk into an affair with Stevie Nicks. All of this hardship created an atmosphere that shaped the general direction of all the lyrics in the album. It also became a big critical success, with many critics naming this album as the best that theyve done.
The groups three main songwriters each carved out their territory as their romantic lives with each other were falling apart. Stevie Nicks had a touch of mystic (Dreams, Gold Dust Woman). Christine McVie wrote universal anthems (Dont Stop, Songbird) and Lindsey Buckingham churned out dynamic pop confectionaries with undercurrents of emotional distress (Second Hand News, Go Your Own Way). Its all here in this 70-minute, 1997 chronicle of the making of one of pop musics biggest albums ever, Rumours. All five members of Fleetwood Macs most successful incarnation are interviewed, and their comments are even more candid than the confessional songs (Dreams, Go Your Own Way et al.) on the album itself; descriptions of the torturous process of making a record while John and Christine McVies marriage and the Lindsey Buckingham- Stevie Nicks liaison were breaking up at the same time makes for compelling, if slightly discomfiting, viewing. Meanwhile, lest one forget that Rumours was terrific as well as revealing, plenty of attention is paid to the songs. Particularly fascinating (as with most Classic Albums packages) are the breakdowns of the separate instrumental and vocal components of individual tracks.
